What are Fungi?

Fungi are a group of organisms that belong to the kingdom of Fungi. They are eukaryotic organisms that are distinct from plants, animals, and bacteria. Fungi come in many different shapes and sizes and can be found in diverse habitats such as soil, water, and air.

Distinct characteristics of Fungi

Fungi have some distinct characters, let's have a look at them. 

1. Fungi reproduce both by asexual and sexual methods. 

2. In fungi there are three stages of sexual reproduction :  

(i) Plasmogany (fusion of cytoplasm)

(ii) Karyogany (fusion of nuclei)

(iii) Meiosis

3. They are decomposers and mineralisers of the biosphere like bacteria.

4. Fungi have a double-envelope cellular organization. 

5. In fungi cell wall is present it is composed of chitin. 

6. They are multicellular, eukaryotic and non-chlorophyllous organisms.
