What are Fungi? Fungi are a group of organisms that belong to the kingdom of Fungi. They are eukaryotic organisms that are distinct from plants, animals, and bacteria.  Fungi come in many different shapes and sizes and can be found in diverse habitats such as soil, water, and air. What are the distinct characteristics of Fungi? Distinct characteristics of Fungi Fungi have some distinct characters, let's have a look at them.  1. Fungi reproduce both by asexual and sexual methods.  2. In fungi there are three stages of sexual reproduction :   (i) Plasmogany (fusion of cytoplasm) (ii) Karyogany (fusion of nuclei) (iii) Meiosis 3. They are decomposers and mineralisers of the biosphere like bacteria. 4. Fungi have a double-envelope cellular organization.  5. In fungi cell wall is present it is composed of chitin.  6. They are multicellular, eukaryotic and non-chlorophyllous organisms.

Nomenclature and the Codes of Biological Nomenclature What is a Nomenclature? A system of technical and scientific names given to living organisms animals and plants is known as a binomial nomenclature. It is made up of two words L. bi which is double, and G. nomos which represents the name.  According to this system, each plant and animal is given a two-word name, from which the first name shows the genus (plural is genera) from which the organism is from, and the second name is the specific name or the specific epithet referring to the species of the organism.  One interesting rule for scientific names is that all scientific names should be taken and drawn only from Greek or Latin words.
